Electrical Panels are the heart of the electrical system running your home.
The entire electrical energy flows through these panels and then get distributed to all of the electrical outlets, receptacles, switches, and lights.
The panel contains breakers, which protect each circuit from drawing too much power. The consequences of drawing too much power is overheating the wires inside the walls, a dangerous situation which may result in an electrical fire!
Many homes contain unsafe panels such as when a panel is old, rusty, or when it has sparked in the past. Old breakers might not trip when they should and therefore not provide the safety they were designed for.
There are also a number of brands, from the 60's and 70's, that are not considered safe. These panel/breakers brands have been known to be responsible for many electrical fires. They are generally grandfathered in, though this does not make them safe.
A jurisdiction will often require the homeowner to replace such panels when pulling a permit for seemingly unrelated work such as a kitchen remodel.
This is old and not very safe! There is also no room for expansion.
Corroded metal does not conduct properly and can cause overheating.
Some brands are known to be unsafe and responsible for many electrical fires.
proper wiring, correct bending, and new breakers insures safety.
Trimming and caulking insures water tightness.
Circuits need to be identified and properly labeled.
